Come to Maki’s little atelier and savour her mini-artworks to smell and taste. Extraordinary mini-cocktails and snacks, influenced by molecular gastronomy, with a Japanese touch. UEDA Maki is one of the few artists in the world using smell as a medium. Her interest lies in the scent in the real life, such as the smell of space, the smell of food and drink, the smell of a person, and the smell related to the memories. A CAMERA JAPAN favourite, she has presented her smell and taste related projects and installations worldwide.

    (1) Treat for the eyes
    Cherry blossoms jelly (agar-agar-base) with green tea syrup and gold flakes

    (2) The sense of a taste experiment
    A small experiment for the sense of taste (and smell). Close your eyes and pinch your nose. Can you distinguish a slice of orange from apple?

    (3) Flavor synthesizer
    Eat or smell? Savor "umino-sachi", the sea flavor, but with your nose. Oyster perfume with soy sauce.

    (4) Inner body concert
    Eating is actually quite noisy! Wear ear plugs and eye shades. Player: Japanese cracker with nori seaweed.

    (5) Sensation
    Test tube cocktail - chardonnay and sansho pepper, with some surprise.

    * Preferably no perfume please
    * Suitable for vegetarian and vegan (if only inhaling)

ARTIST TALK at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen feat. UEDA Maki & USHIDA Yuya
An extendable sofa made out of 7770 wooden chopsticks and a perfume called the ‘Scents of Holland’. These are only two of the countless creations by industrial designer USHIDA Yuya and olfactory artist UEDA Maki who will discuss their work in person. Joining the two of them, will be Noor MERTENS, the curator of Museum Boijman’s recent ON Kawara exhibit, to talk about the oeuvre of this renowned Japanese conceptual artist.

Sukebeningen Performance @ The Hague, NL


A performance by the group Sukebeningen will be held in The Hague on the 7th of September, in search for the multi-sensory Japanese eroticism.  I'm in charge of the scent part.

‘Scheveningen voor Japanners’

De naam van het project Sukebeningen komt van het Nederlandse woord Scheveningen. Japanners spreken Scheveningen uit als ‘Sukebeningen’. Het woord sukebe betekent in het Japans echter ondeugend en ningen betekent mens. Dus Sukebeningen betekent ‘ondeugend mens’. Om deze reden staat Scheveningen in Japan bekend als de badplaats met de komische naam.

In Sukebeningen onderzoeken de makers karakteristieke Japanse erotische kunst door verschillende media te gebruiken. Het culturele verschil tussen het Nederlandse en Japanse concept van erotiek wordt door muziek, dans, geluid, beeldende en geurkunst uitgewerkt. Deze keer werken de makers samen met een grafische stempelkunstenaar om twee nieuwe werken te ontwikkelen.

Er worden 2 performances opgevoerd en 1 film vertoond.

Natuurlijk kan je tijdens Hoogtij ook de expo Ik en mijn held bekijken.

Met: Noriko Koide, Yota Morimoto, Akane Takada, Maki Ueda, Masaaki Oyamada.

Tijdens Hoogtij kun je 26 locaties bezoeken van 19.00-23.00 uur. Van White Cube tot underground: van meer gevestigde kunst in de galeries en instellingen tot experimentele kunst, installaties en performances bij de kunstenaarsinitiatieven en in de openbare ruimte.

Hoogtij in Het Nutshuis wordt gemaakt door jonge componisten, beeldend kunstenaars en andere live art makers. Zij experimenteren een avond lang met de ruimte in Het Nutshuis. Geluid, performance, dans en multimedia voor de avontuurlijke bezoeker.

"Bliff", an olfactory board game by Oxalis Atindriyaratri

It's already quite some time ago...  A student of mine has developed an interesting and unique olfactory game for her master degree at Leiden University. Just to share it with you.

Recently I receive a lot of interviews from master students on olfactory art.  I am certain that there'll be more and more interest in this field.

Bliff” is an olfactory board game in which players’ olfaction (sense of smell) is the only sense required for them to advance through the game. Players are given various challenges regarding their sense of smell, and their ability to answer these challenges will be rewarded with certain number of moves.
The design of the board game was inspired by existing traditional board games such as Chinese Checkers and Ludo, based on the facts that these games are already familiar to people in general and its simplicity enables players to play the game without learning many rules. This consideration was also taken because olfactory games are practically new and unfamiliar (thus it requires player’s adaptation), so other game elements should be simple and easy to play.

Bliff is developed as a part of my graduation project/research entitled: “Bliff: Exploring Olfaction Autonomy in Olfactory Board Games” for the MSc Media Technology programme atLeiden University. The project was supervised by Edwin van der Heide and Maki Ueda

MAKING BLIFF
To make a game, there are several elements I had to make. However, since neither my paper nor the physical product of the game is copyrighted, I limit the description of game elements on the making of the scents only.

The scents in this game are used as pawns, and they are contained in small bottles I bought at a drogist (drug store) in Den Haag. In total, I needed at least 18 different scents to be contained in 39 bottles. Since extracting ingredients to get all those different scents could take really a lot of time (which I didn’t have, unfortunately), I bought some of the ready-made scents essentials oils (most of these I bought at Dille and Kamille) and food essences (available at most supermarkets). Those which were not yet available in liquid forms (or too expensive to buy one) I extracted the scents of the ingredients using alcohol.

I went to media tech classmate Ali’s place to extract these ingredients because he has an electric stove at his apartment (as alcohol would be a terrible combination with gas stove), and helped by Maarten, we made several “perfumes”.
Some of the ingredients were successfully extracted, yet some of them not. But at least I had enough scents for my game.

TESTING BLIFF
Since game development is an iterative process, I needed to test my game to see whether it worked or not. Basically the game should be engaging yet does not create olfactory fatigue. I held 11 game sessions with a total of 22 players in the span of 2 weeks. I asked them to play and I observed the game play. I also asked them to fill in questionnaires to know what the players think towards the game.
